Dave Hoffman and Friends on Sunday at four in the afternoon, Westminster Presbyterian Church, Peoria has inaugurated a new Jazz Vesper service with Dave Hoffman and various friends filling the church with everything from cool to hot jazz in praise of God. Dave doesn’t water anything down, so we hear the best of his art in this service of worship.
Vespers are a very old tradition in the Christian Church. The form is simple with Scripture, Prayers and music … along with a short Homily (sermon). It is a forty minute service, keeping it within the bounds of possibility for even younger children. We hope it will truly become a way to bridge all age groups … worshipping together each week.

Derel Monteith formed his own piano trio in 2015, though he has been playing jazz in Central Illinois since 2007. In the short time since its formation, the Derel Monteith Trio has become a regional favorite through regular performances at Jazz UpFront in Bloomington and concerts at venues such as Knox College and CEFCU Center Stage. Derel leads the group through high-energy performances of an eclectic range of music, drawing from his own compositions, standards from the classic small-group jazz repertoire, and even some instrumental arrangements of British rock songs. Derel graduated from the prestigious jazz program at the University of Miami and studied thereafter with the Grammy-winning composer Maria Schneider; that background and over 25 years of professional jazz piano experience combine to make him a highly creative and engaging artist that should not be missed. Joining Derel in the trio are Andy Crawford on bass and Jason Brannon on drums, both of whom help shape the overall sound and style of the group with their own significant musical voices.
The Central Illinois Jazz Society (CIJS) House Band will play during the first set, under the leadership of Larry Harms. The CIJS House Band features outstanding jazz musicians from the area.
