For over 30 years, Glenn Wilson has been at the forefront of the jazz baritone saxophone world. The All Music Guide recently described him as “an unsung hero in modern jazz”. His music has been described as ‘free-bop’, rooted in the bebop style with a looseness and spontaneity that always surprises, which makes him unique among purveyors of the big horn. Glenn Wilson has earned a Masters in Jazz Performance from the University of Illinois and a Bachelors in Music Education from Youngstown State University and is currently on the jazz faculty at the University of Illinois – Champaign/Urbana, where he teaches Jazz Pedagogy and Music Business, as well as saxophone studio and combos/ensembles. In his years in New York City (1977-1991), Glenn toured and recorded with Buddy Rich, Lionel Hampton, Machito, Tito Puente, The Bill Kirchner Nonet, Mel Lewis, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and The Bob Belden Ensemble. He has recorded 6 solo albums and has appeared on dozens of others as a sideman. Glenn has been awarded a grant by the National Endowment for the Arts and his CDs are featured in the Grammaphone Guide to Good Jazz and The Penguin Guide to Jazz. Glenn has also recorded and toured with rock pianist Bruce Hornsby. He continues to record for Sunnyside and tours and performs regularly with his groups, The Jazzmaniacs and TromBari, featuring trombonist Jim Pugh. He can be reached at www.jazzmaniac.com |
