Biography
Jacob (Jake) Hertzog is a guitarist, composer and bandleader from the Midwestern town of Champaign Illinois. He has played in and conducted big bands, and has headlined numerous club dates with his groups, the 4th set quartet and the Jake Hertzog Trio. He has performed with Glenn Wilson (Buddy Rich, Lionel Hampton), Bill Koehler, Steve Anderson, Toby Curtright, Jeff Magby, Kevin Turner, Juan Turros, Cecil Bridgewater, Donny Heitler, and John Faddis. Hertzog has also been a student of and performed with saxophonist Charles McNeill (Arturo Sandoval, Maynard Ferguson). After a time on the rock scene with his band SKYE (whose record received play on alternative radio station in 2002) Jake turned his attention to jazz. His first jazz CD (Winter Sessions, 2004) was recorded with McNeill. Currently, Hertzog has just finished his second full-length jazz record, of all original material called Rate of Ascension (2005). This CD was recorded with a trio and featured McNeill on some of the tracks. The CD is now availible online at cdbaby.com/hertzog. Hertzog has maintained close relationships with the jazz faculty of the University of Illinois, and recently taught at the university run Illinois Summer Youth Music program. His passion for music has brought him to the Berklee School of Music in Boston where he currently studies under Ritchie Hart and Mick Goodrick. In addition to actively performing on the jazz scene in the Midwest and in Boston Jake has also performed with various bands at conventions, hotels, conferences and banquets in duos, with his groups, and as a solo artist.
