Biography
The Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Hall was constructed as a memorial to American Civil War soldiers in Peoria, Illinois, United States in 1909. The hall was dedicated to and known as the Greenhut Memorial in honor of Col. Joseph B. Greenhut, who paid for much of the building. Greenhut served in the Civil War and later made a fortune in Peoria in the whiskey business. The hall was dedicated in 1909 and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1976. The Central Illinois Landmarks Foundation took ownership of the building in the mid-1970s, raising public and private funds to restore the hall, including the repair of its six unique stained-glass windows. Inside is the marble bust of Gen. John "Black Jack" Logan, the Union general who after the Civil War helped organize the Grand Army of the Republic, a veterans organization. Logan is also credited with naming May 30, 1868, as the first Memorial Day. The newly remodeled interior can create a gorgeous historic setting for the storybook weddings, corporate meetings, or banquets for that special occasion.
